THIS CACHE IS PLACED IN MEMORY OF THE ORIGINAL “LAKE LANIER” (GC21), ONE OF THE EARLIEST CACHES IN HISTORY. IT HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED BY ALLEN OF THE LACEY FAMILY. This new cache is a multi-cache at Lake Lanier. Accessable by land. Park at N34° 11.473 W84° 05.230. Find the pebbles (clues) leading to Hansel and Gretel. Some of the pebbles are not your friends.

Hansel and Gretel:

A little variation on the traditional children’s story:

“Hansel and Gretel” is a story about a poor family. There is not enough food for them all. The selfish stepmother talks the loving father into taking Hansel and Gretel into the deep woods and leaving them there in hopes the children would not find their way back to their cottage.

However, Hansel was a bright boy who thought of dropping white pebbles along the path as they went deep into the woods so he and Gretel could find their way back.

As the story goes, Hansel and Gretel encounter a wicked witch who wants to do harm to the children. We must help them out of this trouble! We must find Hansel and Gretel (the cache) in spite of the witch!

Unfortunately, while Hansel was leaving stones to mark the path into the woods, the witch was following behind him dropping stones to throw us off the track. The trick here is to know which are the GOOD stones and which are BOGUS ones….

As you may or may not know, Dahlonega is the site of the first major US gold rush. The stages of this multi-cache are all historical markers in and around Dahlonega with information pertaining to the history of the Dahlonega Gold Rush. Although the final stage is a site relevant to the discovery of gold in North Georgia, it is not a historical marker but rather a .50 caliber ammo box.

Throughout the hunt, the historical roadside markers will contain the answers to the questions found below. Use the answers to find the next stage.

A few pointers before you get started:
1. The numbers 0 – 9 may correspond to more than one letter. (There are more letters in the alphabet than numerical digits)
2. The letter O is not used due to its uncanny resemblance to the number 0.
3. I suggest making a list from A to Z and filling in the corresponding numbers as you go.

Stage 1
The coordinates above are to the first stage.
Here you will find the first historical marker.

What year did Benjamin Parks stub his toe on a chunk of gold, thus sparking the first American Gold Rush? ABCD
This marker is located on Georgia state highway EF (not 19).

Stage 2
N 34°CB.4ED
W 0D4°FA.43F

Auraria, in GHIJ, the scene of Georgia’s first gold rush, was named by John C. Calhoun.
Dahlonega and Auraria were the only two gold towns in America before KLMN.
What year did the “Russell boys” leave Georgia headed for the next Gold Rush in Colorado? 18P8
How much money worth of gold is estimated to have been mined from Georgia’s Cherokee County? Q x 10,000,000 dollars

Stage 3
N 3M°3G.LJM
W FL3°PN.QML

The Price Memorial Building was erected in what year? RSTU
When was the building destroyed by fire? VWXY
The Dahlonega Mint produced Z million dollars worth of gold coins.

Stage 4
N T4°JP.NFM
W FWT°PP.XZE

The final destination is the site of Benjamin Parks’ resting place. Take some time after finding the cache to see if you can find his grave marker.

*Thar’s Gold in Them Thar Hills would be a perfect caching and learning experience for the whole family!*

N 34° 18.039 W 083° 50.088

UTM: 17S E 239099 N 3799131

We take latitude and longitude for granted as digits we enter into our GPS before we go out on a cache hunt. But what if we aren’t given that information? If you haven’t guessed it by now, the coordinates above are NOT where the cache is located, ‘though they do indicate the county seat of the county the cache is in.

”’I wonder what Latitude or Longitude I’ve got to?’ (Alice had no idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but thought they were nice grand words to say.)”

– Alice’s Adventures in WonderlandLatitude: In the northern hemiphere this is the same as the angle at which the north star (Polaris) is observed above the horizon. Navigators have used cross-staffs, astrolabes, and sextants in pre-GPS times to measure this angle. I won’t ask you to do that, but I won’t exactly tell you the latitude either.

Longitude: It wasn’t until John Harrison perfected a precise and dependable enough chronometer that longitude could be accurately determined. That relationship between time and longitude is at the root of finding this cache. Now on to the game:

I hid this cache on a hot, sunny August day. The morning paper’s weather section not only confirmed that it would be sunny but that sunrise in Atlanta would occur at 7:06 am and sunset at 8:06 pm. As the cache is somewhat east of metro Atlanta sunrise and sunset there occured about 5 seconds earlier. By my atomic clock the exact sunrise there was at 7:05:55.0212 (or 5 minutes and 55.0212 seconds after 7am). Sunset was at 8:05:55.0212 pm.

Now to find latitude, I’ll make it easy. The cache is at N34° 09.ABC’. To find ABC you’ll have to do some research on the remarkable John Harrison. A is the third digit of the year he was born. BC together is the sum of his age on his last birthday and the number of wives he had named Elizabeth. (example – if he was 72 and he had one wife named Elizabeth the sum would be 73, BC would be 73)

The actual cache hunt should be an easy walk and fairly easy find, dispite one last little trick at the end.

My appreciation is extended to Washington geocacher EraSeek who assisted in testing my calculations.

NOTE: The park this cache is in is apparently closed to vehicles except during the summer months. I spoke to a Hall Cty. Sheriffs Dept officer patroling the area 10/29. He said he didn’t know why the Corps of Engineers does this but they have no problem with people walking there. If you park outside the gate and walk in it’s still only a quarter mile walk to the cache.
