U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Promotes Safe Boating

A one-day seven lesson “About Boating Safety” course will be held on May 19th. This annual event kicks off the busy summer boating season on Lake Lanier. Full of useful information that just might save your life – this worthwhile course is recommended for novice and expert boaters alike.

Locals Show Pride During the Great American Cleanup

No one can do it all, but everyone can do something will be the mantra this weekend all over Hall County.

Keep Hall Beautiful has organized an unprecedented three, simultaneous cleanups for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14. The events will take place in Oakwood, Flowery Branch and Lula as a part of the Great American Cleanup.

“The Great American Cleanup is a national event put on by Keep America Beautiful. They encourage their affiliates to work with community groups to do different cleanup projects,” said Cindy Reed, Keep Hall Beautiful executive director.

“In 2011, they had around 4 million volunteers and more than 30,000 events taking place in more than 16,000 communities nationwide.”

The Lula cleanup will be focused on roadsides. Participants are to meet at the Historic Lula Train Depot.

Flowery Branch volunteers will also be meeting at their city’s Historic Train Depot before beautifying nearby roadsides and streams.

“We supply everything the volunteers need,” Reed said.

“We have trash bags, gloves and a few pickers in case someone has issues with bending over. We’ll also have some vests to keep people safe.”

In Oakwood, folks will be meeting at city hall before dispersing to cleanup the roadsides and streams in the area.

That cleanup will be held in conjunction with an electronics recycling and paper shredding event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood City Hall.

“People can bring all of their sensitive documents and they’ll be shredded right there in front of them,” Reed said. ”They can also bring in all of their old electronics for recycling. The only thing we charge for is TVs. There’s a $10 charge for those.

“It’s open to everyone. Not just Hall County residents.”

Read-A-Thon Brings Author to Hall

As has become an annual tradition, readers from all over Hall County are preparing to stay up all night to help stamp out illiteracy.

Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, the Hall Book Exchange at 1854 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, will host the fourth annual 24-hour read-a-thon.

The event is a fundraiser for the Gainesville-Hall County Alliance for Literacy, an organization that provides educational opportunities to more than 2,000 people annually.

The marathon reading event will conclude at 5 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to folks reading around the clock, the event will be peppered with a variety of actives, including author visits, book discussions and even a wake-up workout.

Author Braxton Cosby, nephew of Bill Cosby, will be the first to share his work. At 6 p.m. Friday, he will be available to sign copies of his first book, “Protostar.” The young adult fiction book is appropriate for children ages 12 and up.

Rachel Glazer will follow Cosby at 7 p.m. with a children’s bedtime story. In addition to reading a story to younger attendees, she will also present her dramatization of “Martina, A Beautiful Cockroach,” a Cuban folktale written by children’s author Carmen Agra Deedy.

Free refreshments will be available throughout the read-a-thon.

If you are interested in participating, call the book exchange in advance to reserve a time slot.

In addition to the smaller door prizes, two grand prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the event — one for the person who reads the longest and one for the person who raises the most money.
